24 Hour Monitoring
Flying E is video monitored from the gate all the way through the back of the barn. Mares are monitored on a 24 hour basis. Their milk calcium and pH are tested daily to assist in the prediction of foaling. Colostrum is tested upon foaling to assess for the need of colostrum supplementation. Prompt action is key to avoid illness in your neonate!
Nursing, Sleeping or Playing
As the old saying goes, if a foal isn't nursing, sleeping or playing- something is wrong. It is essential to act fast with foals. They can deteriorate in a hurry. Foals less than 24 hours old will nurse every hour to two hours and sleep in between. They sleep laying down. A few warning signs to look for include: dried milk on the foals face, mare's udders dripping/ streaming, foals sleeping while standing, foals rolling up on their backs and tail flagging. Any foal lameness is absolutely an emergency and needs to be taken to the nearest Equine Veterinarian!
Breeding On Foal Heat
It is not necessary to foal out a mare at Flying E that you would like to have bred on foal heat, but it does make the process easier and more successful! We advise you work closely with your vet when making health related decisions and we will assist as much as possible!
